WESTHERSTONE EXPLORERS UPDATES

Mission

The Weatherstone Elementary School family will utilize STEM strategies and philosophies, enhanced by professional learning teams, to promote student growth and to demonstrate responsible citizenship.

Vision

Weatherstone Elementary students are encouraged and empowered by distinguished teachers who facilitate a relevant and rigorous curriculum to ensure student learning that prepares them for their future in a global society.

  • Weatherstone Elementary School (WES) is located in Cary, North Carolina.  It was opened in the 1996-1997 school year and follows the Traditional Calendar for the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) while serving children from grades Kindergarten-5th.

Weatherstone is part of the STEM Collaborative Network of the Wake County Public School System.  Since joining the network, the school has embarked on a journey of collaboration to enhance its curriculum programming through STEM activities, philosophies, and principles.  On June 1, 2017 Weatherstone was named a North Carolina STEM School of Distinction at the Model Level.

It is an academically strong school with achievement proficiency in reading, math, and science above both the state and the WCPSS averages, in all three areas yearly.  Furthermore, in the most recent year reviewing End-of-Grade (EOG) growth data provided by SAS through EVAAS, Weatherstone consistently performs high in both the district and state reports.  In 2015-16, Weatherstone ranked 1st out of 106 elementary schools in the district and 6th out of 1223 elementary schools in the state.

21st Century Learning themes are a natural complement to the STEM program.  In addition to the areas mentioned above, lessons are designed and implemented to promote student Creativity, Collaboration, Critical thinking and Communication skills (The 4 C’s of 21st Century Skills) through real world learning experiences that require regular application of skills learned.  Moreover, the use of technology is expected to be embedded throughout daily instruction, exposing students to using modern technology tools are integral to their development and learning. Technology integration aligns with the required technology skills as outlined in the curriculum while also enhancing student ability to process and share their own learning.

  • STEM @ WES

In 2012 Weatherstone Elementary was designated a member of the WCPSS STEM Network.  On June 1, 2017 WES was honored to be recognized by the North Carolina State Board of Education a NC STEM School of Distinction at the Model Level.
