JANUARY 7, 2022

Dear A.B. Combs families,

It was wonderful to have our students back on campus this week after Winter Break.  We appreciate your ongoing support as we navigate this school year.

Magnet Lottery Process: If you have a student currently in 5th at Combs, you MUST APPLY if you wish to continue at a magnet school at the next grade level. Apply now at magnet.wcpss.net/apply. The deadline to apply is January 27. Please feel free to also visit wcpss.net/magnet for information about upcoming recruitment events. Rising kindergarten siblings of magnet students in grades K-4 MUST enroll and apply to attend the same school as the older sibling.

Meal Benefits application: Parents, please consider applying for meal benefits as soon as possible . By submitting a qualifying application, families will also support the district in qualifying for additional funds to support students and learning! Also, the NC Department of Health & Human Services is collecting student free and reduced lunch and attendance data from WCPSS to determine any  additional Pandemic Electronic Benefits (P-EBT) that will be issued in the coming months! By not applying for these meal benefits, you will miss the potential opportunity to receive direct P-EBT funds for your family!

Yes, meals will still be free for all students through June 2022 but we still need you to complete a meal benefits application so our school can be eligible for this extra education funding next school year. Also, this ensures your student is covered for the first few weeks of school next year. Information about applying for Meal Benefits can be found at www.wcpss.net/meals. Help our school continue to receive this funding by completing an application online at MySchoolApps.com. Paper applications can be requested by calling 919-588-3535.

Important Information regarding bridge on Athens Drive: The North Carolina Department of Transportation has provided us notice regarding the upcoming demolition of the existing Athens Drive Bridge over Interstate 440 and the temporary road closure Eastbound and Westbound 440 from Jones Franklin and Western Boulevard required to complete the demolition. The road closure on 440 will be used to demolish the existing bridge and begin to construct a new one. The temporary road closures on 440 will be an ongoing process nightly from January 23rd through January 28th from 12:00 a.m. until 5:00 a.m. The Athens Drive road closure will last for approximately 365 days to allow for the construction of the new structure and roadway areas. This work is scheduled to begin on the evening of Friday, January 23rd at midnight. If you normally travel this route to Combs, you can make alternative arrangements.

Science Fair: Science Fair boards will be available for NO CHARGE this year for students thanks to our corporate partners!  We will have volunteers giving out science fair boards in front of the Media Center Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 8-8:30.  We also would love more parents as volunteers as judges, interviewers, helpers, and additional corporate partners.  Please send an email to sciencefair@abcombspta.com!  Registration closes January 7th.  Science Fair projects are due Friday, January 14th.

Magnet Tours: Do you know families who would like to tour Combs for the 2022-23 school year?  Our magnet tours are underway and interested families can sign up on our school website.

What to do if your child is sick: If your child shows any of the following symptoms, your child will need to stay home.  If your child is sick at home with these symptoms they may not return to school unless they receive a negative PCR covid test, or an alternate diagnosis from a doctor, or quarantine at home. These symptoms include: shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, cough, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea.  As always, everyone must be fever free and feeling well for 24 hours prior to returning.

Mark your calendars for these upcoming events:

January 14th: Science Fair

January 17th: Martin Luther King, Jr Holiday, No school

January 18th: Teacher Workday, No school

Please continue to visit our website at www.wcpss.net/combses and follow us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.  Have a wonderful weekend, great gators!

Juley Sexton

Principal
